FUTUREFORMSによるデジタルクラフト　

デジタルクラフトが生み出す公共アートと都市空間

アメリカ・サンフランシスコ・ベイエリアを拠点とするアート＆デザインスタジオFUTUREFORMSは公共アートと建築の境界を横断するプロジェクトで公共空間を活性化してきた。スタジオを率いるのは、建築家ジェイソン・ケリー・ジョンソンとナタリー・ガテーニョ。二人は20年以上にわたり、計算デザインとクラフトの融合によって都市空間に新しい体験を生み出している。

21世紀の都市において、公共アートや建築をつくるとはどういうことだろうか。都市のデジタル化が進むにつれ、建築環境とアルゴリズムによって形づくられる生活環境の境界は徐々に溶け合いつつある。この変化を象徴するのが Digital Craft（デジタルクラフト）という新しい概念である。コンピュータを職人の道具として扱い、計算ロジックを用いることで、均質な大量生産を超えた空間表現を可能にする。こうしたアプローチにより、建築は固定されたオブジェクトではなく、都市環境に応答する場として機能する。

公共空間を変えるアート《Orbital》と《Weatherscape》

FUTUREFORMSの代表的なプロジェクトには、テクノロジーと公共空間の関係を体験的に示す作品がある。サンフランシスコ・ミッションベイ地区の OpenAI本社（旧Uber本社）エントランスプラザには、彫刻作品 Orbital（オービタル）が設置されている。現代版の庭園フォリーとして構想されたこの作品は、複雑な計算設計を都市のランドマークへと変換する。数千点に及ぶアルミニウムとスチールのカスタムパーツによって構成される構造体は、外側には鏡面のパンチングステンレスを用いた反射的な表情を持ち、内部には柔らかな光に包まれた空間が広がる。アーティストはこの内部空間を「庭園の生き物（Creature of the Garden）」と表現している。

一方、テキサス州エルパソでは、El Paso Children's Museum（La Nube）のための大型彫刻キャノピー Weatherscape（ウェザースケープ）を完成させた。約70フィート×40フィートの構造は、単なる日除けではなく「驚きの生きた実験室」として設計されている。太陽、風、水といった自然エネルギーを取り込み、ミストや動きへと変換することで、砂漠環境の見えない力を可視化する。子どもから大人までが環境を体験的に理解できる公共アートとなっている。

展覧会「METAXIS」 CCAで開催

こうした都市空間の作品とは対照的に、スタジオの思考プロセスを紹介する展覧会「METAXIS: A Collection of Ideas and Objects」が California College of the Arts（CCA）Campus Gallery で 2026年3月20日まで開催されている。「METAXIS」という言葉はギリシャ語 metaxi に由来し、「二つの領域のあいだに存在する状態」を意味する。本展では、2015年から2025年のあいだに制作された模型、3Dプリント試作、コンセプトオブジェクトなど20点以上を展示する。完成作品だけでなく制作過程のモデルを展示することで、アート、建築、計算デザインといった異なる領域の知識やツールがどのように融合されているのかを示している。

FUTUREFORMS

FUTUREFORMSはアメリカ・サンフランシスコ・ベイエリアを拠点とするアート＆デザインスタジオ。2009年に建築家Jason Kelly JohnsonとNataly Gattegnoが設立した。二人は20年以上にわたり公共空間とアートの関係を探求している。プロジェクトは彫刻的シェードキャノピー、アートパビリオン、都市スケールのインスタレーション、家具、照明、アートマスタープランなど多岐にわたる。エンジニア、建築家、ランドスケープアーキテクトと協働しながら、幾何学、光、影を用いた体験的な作品を制作している。公共アートを通して都市空間に交流や休息、発見の場を生み出すことを目指し、通行人、観光客、地域住民、子どもから大人まで多様な人々に開かれた表現を展開している。
