新たなリバーフロントのインスタレーションが、地元アーティストの歌詞を再構成しながら街の文化的物語への参加を促す
アメリカ・フロリダのジャクソンビルで、リバーフロントに誕生した新たなパブリックアート作品が、この街の豊かな音楽遺産を創造性と市民参加を促すインタラクティブな体験へと変貌させている。The Urban Congaが手がけた「A Cappella」は、セント・ジョンズ川沿いに新設されたジャクソンビル・リバーフロント・ミュージックガーデン内、ジャクソンビル交響楽団に隣接する場所に設置された。

プロジェクトの核となるのは、ジャクソンビルが誇る豊かな音楽文化である。広範な地域コミュニティとの協働を通じて開発された「A Cappella」には、1920年代から2020年代までのおよそ100年にわたり活動した60組以上のジャクソンビル出身アーティストによる84曲の歌詞が取り入れられている。地域住民は、街の歴史や個性、アイデンティティを象徴する楽曲や歌詞の選定に参加し、その結果、ジャクソンビルの音楽シーンの多様性と、世代を超えて共有されるテーマの双方を示すコレクションが生み出された。

The Urban Conga
ニューヨーク・ブルックリンを拠点とするThe Urban Congaは、ライアン・スワンソンとAIA、NOMA会員のメイガン・コールマンが率いる受賞歴のある学際的デザインスタジオである。同スタジオは、遊びが公共空間におけるコミュニティの交流や社会的活動を促進する触媒となり得る可能性を探求している。建築、アーバンデザイン、パブリックアート、ソーシャルプラクティスの領域を横断しながら活動し、見過ごされてきた場所や十分に活用されていない空間を、好奇心や交流、主体的な学びを促す刺激的な環境へと変える、多層的かつ包摂的な空間づくりに取り組んでいる。
同スタジオの実践の中核にあるのは、「遊び」の手法を重要なツールとして活用することである。それは完成した作品そのものだけでなく、作品を生み出すコミュニティ主導のデザインプロセスにも組み込まれている。The Urban Congaは、参加型デザインやオープンエンドな空間システムが、より共感的で応答性に優れ、社会的レジリエンスを備えた環境の形成にどのように寄与できるかを探究している。
