A 200-metre Tower Positions JD.com at the Centre of Nanjing’s Fast-Growing Tech and AI Corridor
Büro Ole Scheeren has released its design for JD Beacon, a new regional headquarters and R&D hub for e-commerce giant JD.com in Nanjing. Rising 200 metres in the Jianye High-tech Zone, the project is set to become a key anchor in the city’s Hexi Central Science and Technology Innovation district—an area already home to major tech players such as Alibaba and Xiaomi.
The 274,000-square-metre development will consolidate JD.com’s corporate offices with advanced research functions. As China’s largest retailer by revenue and ranked 44th on the 2025 Fortune Global 500, JD.com continues to expand its footprint in high-end fields including artificial intelligence and robotics, and the new complex is positioned to accelerate that push.
Scheeren’s design translates the company’s technological ambitions into an architectural statement. At its centre stands a tower composed of interlocking, transparent volumes and landscaped open terraces that carve a continuous three-dimensional connection to the city. These cut-outs reveal collaborative office environments intended to foster innovation, while outdoor terraces offer additional work and meeting spaces with views across Nanjing.
Encircling the tower, a ring of low-rise buildings forms an integrated campus that activates the surrounding streets and extends JD.com’s presence at ground level. A large entrance plaza, shaped by water features and landscaped elements, provides both a ceremonial threshold and practical access for pedestrians and vehicles.
Büro Ole Scheeren won the commission through an international competition, and construction began in November 2025. When completed, JD Beacon is expected to serve as a flagship for Nanjing’s emerging digital economy and a visible symbol of JD.com’s next phase of technological growth.
