手入れや長期使用を重んじる日本の価値観を、現代建築として可視化
クリエイティブディレクター・堅田佳一が率いるKATATA YOSHIHITO DESIGN（L/O）のデザインによる、「藤次郎ナイフギャラリー 大阪」がDezeenアワード2025（リテールデザイン部門）を受賞した。80カ国以上から寄せられた4,300件超の応募作品の中から選出された本プロジェクトは、明快なコンセプト、精緻な素材表現、そして文化的背景の深さが高く評価された。

大阪の歴史ある刃物・厨房用品の集積地、難波千日前道具屋筋商店街に位置する同ギャラリーは、日本の刃物文化を現代的な空間体験として再構築。ナイフの販売スペースに加え、研ぎや修理を行うオープンなメンテナンスルームを併設し、来訪者は熟練の職人による作業を間近に目にすることができる。これらの工程をあえて隠さず、空間の中心に据えることで、道具を使い捨てではなく「長く付き合う存在」として捉える日本的な価値観が表現されている。

本プロジェクトの特徴のひとつが、生産と小売の明確な統合にある。メンテナンスルームには、新潟・燕三条にある藤次郎本社工場と同一の機械や道具が導入され、日常的な手入れから高度な修理まで対応可能な体制が整えられている。こうしたインフラを可視化することで、耐久性や責任ある使用、そして継続的なケアを重視するブランドの思想が、空間そのものを通して伝えられている。

建築的には、伝統的な日本の建築技法である「鎧張り」を、ナイフの展示システムとして再解釈している点が注目される。ナイフは木製パネルを背景に浮遊するように配置され、隠されたマグネットと精密に設計された構造ディテールによって、安全性と視覚的な緊張感の両立が図られている。内部の温かみのある木質空間は、鎧のようなステンレススチールのファサードと対照を成し、空間の機能を明確に示す一貫したデザイン言語を形成している。

建築を自己目的化するのではなく、本プロジェクトの設計は「この空間が何を伝えるべきか」という問いから始まった。その前提に基づき、空間構成、素材選定、ユーザー体験が逆算的に組み立てられている。こうして完成した商業空間は、伝統と産業が構造的に結びついた場として、日本の職人技を〈ケア・精度・継続性〉という価値観とともに、現代的に表現している。

KATATA YOSHIHITO DESIGN（L/O）は、新潟を拠点とするマルチディシプリナリーなデザインスタジオで、建築、インテリアデザイン、プロダクトデザイン、クリエイティブディレクションまで幅広い分野で活動している。同スタジオは、職人技、産業、そして地域文化に根ざしたプロジェクトを軸に、複雑なアイデアや技術、歴史を、明快な空間構成と体験として翻訳することを特徴としている。
形態そのものを目的とするのではなく、プロジェクトが何を伝えるべきかを起点に据え、そこから空間、構造、そして体験を構築していく点をデザインアプローチとする。
