MIID REKA Awards 2021 is open for new and exciting interior design entries until 30th November

Established by The Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) , MIID REKA Awards is the premier Malaysian Interior Design Awards event and was created to further enhance and elevate the nation's Interior Design standards by acknowledging and honoring excellence in creativity in the profession. Now the MIID REKA Awards 2021 edition is open for submissions until 30th November 2021. This year’s competition is focused on two award categories - Design Excellence and Industry Excellence.  In the ‘Design Excellence’ category, honors will be conferred to Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia’s (LAM) interior design registered members that demonstrate creative excellence in their submitted projects. The 'Industry Excellence' awards are open to Malaysian registered companies that construct interior works, provide interior works and services, manufacture/ supply/design interior products, and conduct innovative research towards the betterment of interior design.

Although the year 2021 will be a very challenging period for all involved in the Interior Design industry, MIID’s 10th year anniversary is set to culminate in the most memorable occasion where the most innovative and creative interior design projects will be showcased, recognized and honored.  The event will also serve to energize the institute in its effort to steer the Interior Design profession to greater heights and success in the name of design and professional excellence.

Design Excellence Award

The ‘Design Excellence’ award offers 10 sub-categories of competition covering various building classifications. For 2021, in conjunction of MIID’s 10th year Anniversary, the ‘Best Interior Design of the Year’ award will make its maiden appearance to honor the best project across all categories.

Industry Excellence Award

The ‘Industry Excellence’ award categories are specifically catered for Interior Builders, Interior Products and Research & Development within the Interior Design work sphere. The awards are intended to acknowledge the consistency and outstanding performances and contributions of industry players that have elevated industry standards and promoted quality awareness in line with MIID’s objectives of interior design excellence.

MIID has also convened an impressive and notable array of professional and award-winning design personalities across the Asian continent to evaluate submitted entries for the REKA Awards 2021. 

Judges for the ‘Design Excellence’ category
IDr Ronnie Choong (Chief Judge)

Founder of Innovative Space Dimension Sdn Bhd and Past President of Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers, Ronnie was recognized for his contribution to the interior design industry as recipient of the MSID Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, and the International Federation of Interior Designers Fellowship Award.

Kezia Karin

Founder of one of the leading design houses in Indonesia, Kezia Karin Studio, Kezia employs a multidisciplinary approach to her designs that is driven by endless curiosity whilst standing by the belief that design will and shall always evolve to encompass all aspects of the interiors to exceed notions of trends and styles.

Anon Pairot

Hailing from Thailand, Anon is the founder of Anon Pairot Design Studios. Anon is the creative driving force focusing on the development for many associated brands such as Planet 2001 Co.Ltd, Kalser Porzlaine Gmbh (Germany), Lamptitude, Kenkoon, Plato, Kun etc. His creativity has been awarded and displayed at an international level which included Salon Sattelite, Macef Desing Awards, Red Dot Germany, Best of the Best Furniture Chair of the Year 2007 from Singapore Furniture Industry Council, Wallpaper Awards, HabitatExhibition with Tom Dixon, Paris Talent A La Cart 2004, Face of Designer of the year 2011. His successes has also brought him an invitation from Alexander Von Vegesack, Chairman of the Boards Vitra Design Museum in France to be a representative at the Boisbuchet Workshop at CIGE, China. He was also honoured by Thailand’s Fine Arts Department for the award of Silpa Bhirasri as the best designer for the year 2008 - 2009.

Horace Pan

Establishing his prominent Hong Kong-based award-winning practice ‘Panorama Design’ in 2003, Horace has gained prominence in Interior Architecture & Branding Solutions, and has garnered over 150 international design awards and honours including Germany’s iF Design Awards & Red Dots Awards, US’s IIDA Global Excellence Awards & IDA Design Awards, Japan’s JCD Design Awards Best 100, Taiwan’s TID Design Award, UK’s FX Design Awards, Singapore’s SIDS Design Award & INSIDE Awards Finalist , Netherland’s Great Indoors Awards, China’s Most Successful Design Awards, The Ring - iC@ward International Interior Design, Hong Kong’s Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards and many more.

IDr. Kathleen P. Obcemea

Based in Manila, Philippines, Kathleen is the Founder and Principal Interior Designer of KPO Beyond Designs Co. As the creative mind behind the brand, her intuitive aesthetic has launched her to distinction as one of Manila’s most distinguished interior designers for residential, commercial, and hospitality projects.adf-web-magazine-miid-reka-awards-2021-2

IDr Anura Hashim (Chief Judge)

Anura’s portfolios with YJA Interiors Kuala Lumpur include the design of hospitals, banks, office spaces, houses and show units. As one of MIID founding members, Anura served as the Chairlady of Students’ Saturday from 2004-2016, and remains passionate in promoting the event to design enthusiasts.

Dato’ Prof. Tajuddin Ismail

A reputable artist worthy of respect and recognition for his amazing abstract art, Dato’ Professor Tajuddin is an alumnus of the art & design fraternity in Malaysia, Los Angeles and New York. He has participated in more than 150 solo and group exhibitions in Malaysia and throughout countries within Asia, South America, Europe, and USA. He has also served as a Professor of Fine Art & Interior Design at UITM and Sunway University, and is a co-founder of TJ FINE ART Gallery, KL.

Andrew Tan

Founder of the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, Andrew has become a recognized icon of Malaysia’s fashion industry. He constantly gives pivotal advice and consultation to homegrown designers to help them to be digitally equipped professionals by conducting the-business-of-fashion talk or challenging the designers to explore and experiment with their design aesthetics. 

Sulaiman Arshad

Director of Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM), a non-profit agency under the supervision of the Ministry of International Trade & Industry, Sulaiman helms the nation’s think tank that advises and consults on the evolution and developments of innovative designs towards international standards among Malaysians. He is an accomplished Graphic Designer and multi award winner with vast experience in advertising, graphic design, and development of branding & packaging design as well as in development of entrepreneurship.

Ar. Serina Hijjas

Vice President of the Malaysia Green Building Council, Serina’s work has long been environmentally focused. She is one of the creative directors at HIJJAS architects & planners and is known for changing the building landscape of architecture through buildings that are responsive, energy conscious and bold. Her formative years exposed her to energy efficiency and sustainable design which have culminated in projects such as the Heriot Watt University ‘green campus’, Celcom Tower ‘interconnective offices’ and EPIC waste training centre.

Oliver Roche

With over 27 years of experience in the USA, Qatar, Ireland, Vietnam & Malaysian construction industries, Oliver is the founder of Real Project Management Sdn Bhd and RPM Schedulers Sdn Bhd, companies that provide planning and scheduling services to the construction and Oil & Gas industries.
