Explore the natural motifs used by various brands

The second chapter of “Nature symbols in the brands” explores into the creativity of nature-inspired motifs in the works of Dior, Ferrari, La Coste and Versace. Let’s take a closer look!

DIOR - Motif “Toile de Jouy”

The “TOILE DE JOUY” motif, revisited and widely included in Dior's collections since 2019, has very distant origins. It was in 1760 when in the workshops of Christophe Philippe Oberkampf - one of the largest producers of cotton fabrics of the time - in Jouy-en-Josas in France, that this motif came to life. It was made with carved wooden stamps and later with more advanced printing techniques. Initially he portrayed rural scenes, showing country life, country houses, mills, courtship scenes, then expanding with increasingly varied and diversified themes, such as scenes that reflected contemporary interests, such as the first hot air balloon flight and Bastille Day. The colors used were very bright such as bright red, bisque blue and purple.

The reinterpretation of “TOILE DE JOUY”, which took place under the guidance of Maria Grazia Chiuri, features wild animals, succulent plants and new shades such as camel, black and grey, giving it the nickname “Forest”.

A fabric with ancient charm that even today continues to be synonymous with elegance and refinement.

The choice of this animal takes origins from René Lacoste's nickname. This name was attributed to him from the American press after a tennis match during the championship “Davis Cup”. This nickname expresses his determination and his ability to play tennis with such strength and aggression, much like the animal itself.

The MEDUSA logo was inspired from the Greek mythology. It was in 1993 when Gianni Versace - native to Calabria, in the South of Italy - was looking for a symbol that could link his origin with the Maison.
