Reviving a 1900 Manor with Maximalism

Interior designer Marta Castellano-Mas has renovated a 1900-built manor in the Empordà region of Girona, Spain, restoring its grandeur through a maximalist approach. The design blends classical and rustic elements with contemporary accents, creating an eclectic and sophisticated aesthetic.

Rediscovering Historical Value

The project focused on reclaiming lost architectural details and enhancing the home's original character. False ceilings and wall coverings were removed to expose handmade bricks and structural elements, while outdated flooring was replaced to restore the sense of space. Original woodwork, ceiling frescoes, and gallery arches were preserved to emphasize the home's historical significance.

Commitment to Authentic Materials

High-quality natural materials were carefully selected. Pine flooring was installed and tinted on-site, while polished concrete was chosen for the kitchen. A freestanding copper bathtub, brass fixtures, lime-washed walls, and custom-reproduced woodwork all contribute to the home's unique identity.

The Aesthetics of Maximalism

The grandeur of the manor is matched with a mix of historic and contemporary furnishings. The high ceilings enhance the sense of openness and light, while antique pieces sourced from Florence, Provence, and Antwerp add character and narrative to the space.

Kitchen and Patio

The kitchen embraces a neutral palette while maintaining a refined design. Dark gray-painted oak slatted doors integrate seamlessly, and an iron frame above the range hood supports climbing plants, creating a small vertical garden. The patio, with its aged-textured walls, terracotta potted plants, and classic iron furniture, evokes the charm of old-world estates.

Master Bedroom and Bathro

An arched double wooden door defines the transition into the master bedroom, enhancing the home's historic ambiance. Rich, deep tones create a serene atmosphere, complemented by a headboard composed of 12 framed lithographs sourced from a Florentine antique shop. The bathroom is a dramatic sanctuary, featuring an Indian-sourced freestanding copper bathtub placed strategically to overlook the patio. A mother-of-pearl disc chandelier and an Antonio Mora painting further elevate the space’s theatrical elegance.
