Transforming Traditional Cultural Imagery to Urban Public Space
Opened in March 2024, Huachiao Vibrant Sports Park designed by SoBA (Soft Build Architects) in Kunshan, Suzhou, represents a distinctive approach to urban public space, where traditional cultural imagery is reinterpreted through contemporary sports design. Covering approximately 6,000 square meters along Greenbelt Avenue, the park draws conceptual inspiration from the flowing water sleeves of Kunqu opera, merging centuries-old Chinese aesthetics with the dynamic culture of skateboarding and community sports.
Rather than relying on literal symbolism, the design abstracts the fluid movement of water sleeves into sculptural landforms and circulation paths. These flowing geometries shape the park’s terrain, creating continuous movement spaces that organically link different activity zones. The result is an environment that is both visually legible and experientially intuitive, reinforcing a strong cultural identity while supporting everyday use.
Material innovation plays a central role in translating this concept into built form. A signature “white ribbon” skate zone, constructed from ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), anchors the park visually and functionally. The material’s strength and durability meet the demanding requirements of skateboarding, while its seamless surface enhances the sense of motion and lightness, allowing bodily movement and spatial expression to align.
Beyond skating, the park accommodates a wide range of activities. Basketball courts, table tennis areas, a pavilion, and children’s play equipment are carefully distributed to serve residents of all ages. Efficient circulation planning maximizes usability within the compact site, improving accessibility and overall user experience.
As a community-oriented public space, the park prioritizes inclusivity and social interaction. Seating, shaded areas, and open gathering zones encourage informal encounters among residents, while accessibility considerations ensure that people with varying physical abilities can engage with the space in multiple ways.
Environmental performance is also integral to the project. Optimized planting strategies increase greenery coverage despite site constraints, contributing to improved air quality, microclimate regulation, and ecological resilience. The use of locally appropriate trees and shrubs supports biodiversity while reducing long-term maintenance demands.
More than a sports facility, Huachiao Vibrant Sports Park functions as a contemporary model for community-centered urban renewal. By integrating cultural narrative, advanced materials, and ecological strategies, the project demonstrates how public landscapes can simultaneously support physical activity, social life, and cultural continuity.
SoBA
SoBA (Soft Build Architects) is a design practice founded in Suzhou in 2021, working across architecture, landscape, interior, and urbanism. The studio advocates a “soft” approach to building—one that is adaptive, sensitive, and attentive to people and place. “Soft” conveys openness and responsiveness, while “Build” reflects the studio’s commitment to transforming clear ideas into well-crafted spatial outcomes.
Rooted in both Eastern and Western cultural backgrounds, SoBA integrates diverse ways of thinking into its design process. The studio combines analytical clarity with intuitive sensitivity, drawing from cross-cultural perspectives to develop spatial strategies that respond to contemporary urban and environmental challenges.
