Nature meets Cyberpunk
MAD DOG JONES’ works deftly interweave cyberpunk elements with the beauty and freedom of nature. As a lover of the wilderness, which was ever present where he grew up, he brings a fresh thematic to the metropolitan aesthetic, done up in citrus and neon tones of technology somehow rendered as a space naturally human.
Having grown up around Thunder Bay, MAD DOG JONES draws constant inspiration from the Canadian wilderness, as well as from Japanese animation, SF films, and cyberpunk, pulling together a rare and powerful fusion of two worlds sometimes deemed irreconcilable.
The exhibition’s title, AFTERL-IFE, with its oddly-placed hyphen, emphasizes those unexpected breaks in life―breaks as in fissures, breaks as in pauses. In that sense, the exhibition is a chance to look to the future and to the past, to take a break from life, and to examine art, our world, and our daily lives―all while opening the door to a world somehow familiar, yet that maintains an exotic distance.
Since 2017, when MAD DOG JONES first introduced his art to Instagram, it has exploded in popularity, yet this will be the first exhibition of his works anywhere in the world. As such, this will be the first chance to see his works up close―translated into our world just as they translate our world itself into an experience intimate and grand at the same time.
MAD DOG JOHNS
Canadian born visual artist.
With a strong background in music and multiple gold/platinum hits, he launched his artistic career as MAD DOG JONES in 2017.
His works, presented until now mainly via Instagram where their popularity spread quickly, blend eclectic influences from Japanese animation, SF film, and cyberpunk with the natural world, one in which he grew up, surrounded by the Canadian wilderness. His dual affinities with music and art have led him to create cover art and other works for Maroon 5, Trippie Redd, Chromeo, Vanoss and more.
