A Contemporary Spa in a Historic Lakeside Setting
Le Spa at Manoir Hovey, designed by LAMAS Architecture Ltd, is an elegant blend of historical respect and contemporary architecture, nestled on the shores of Lake Massawippi in Quebec, Canada. This expansion and renovation of the iconic Manoir Hovey harmoniously integrates the site’s natural landscape with the historical significance of the manor, originally built in 1900 as a summer estate for Henry Atkinson, inspired by George Washington's Mount Vernon.
Inspiration and Renovation
In 2020, Manoir Hovey initiated a major refurbishment, updating its pool and adding a new spa facility. LAMAS took a thoughtful approach to integrating the spa into the natural hillside landscape, preserving the historical architectural style of the manor while introducing modern amenities. When viewed from the lake, the colonnade of the spa complements the historic structure without overpowering the manor’s grandeur.

Facilities Immersed in Nature
The spa’s interiors embrace clean, abstract design elements, reflecting the beauty of the natural surroundings. Massage rooms and the hammam feature finishes that evoke the granite cliffs of Lake Massawippi, with red and gold accent tiles in the locker rooms to capture the seasonal colors of the region. Each suite boasts private terraces and wide windows that frame breathtaking views of the lake and forest, creating a serene, immersive experience.

Architectural Challenges and Solutions
The spa’s hillside location presented steep inclines and required careful grading to ensure stability and drainage. Although the locker rooms are windowless due to the terrain, a skylight in the women’s changing area brings in soft, natural light. Engineers strategically integrated complex mechanical systems into spaces between the decks and hillside, maintaining a discreet profile.

Preserving Heritage
The spa’s exterior design mirrors the manor’s iconic colonnade, blending gracefully with the natural surroundings. During construction, portions of the original structure and a 100-year-old vine had to be temporarily removed with great care. These historical elements were successfully restored, preserving the building’s timeless character.
A Fresh Take on Interior Design
While respecting the heritage of the exterior, LAMAS was given creative freedom to explore modern, minimalistic elements within the spa’s interior. The hammam, massage rooms, and luxurious suites feature abstract design details inspired by the local landscape. Large skylights and natural wood details further enhance the spa’s calming atmosphere, fostering a deep connection with the environment.
