Gongkan’s art explores themes of freedom, transformation and self-discovery, shaped by his evolution from street art in New York to international acclaim

One of Thailand’s most internationally recognized contemporary artists, Gongkan has built a career on themes of freedom, escape, and introspection. His signature "teleport art"—characterized by figures emerging from black portals—serves as a metaphor for movement, transformation and self-discovery. But the road to success was anything but easy.

His artistic path began when he moved to New York to study fine art. It was a challenging transition—coming from Thailand to one of the world's most competitive art scenes. Struggling to gain recognition from galleries, he turned to street art and graffiti as a means of expression. His early street art involved placing black-and-white teleportation-themed stickers on New York’s lamp posts. During his four years in New York, he developed the foundation for his now-iconic teleportation theme, inspired by his feelings of displacement and longing for escape.

Upon his return to Thailand, Gongkan’s career gained momentum. He participated in various exhibitions before making his international debut with Over the Influence in Los Angeles, followed by a show in Paris with the same gallery. Afterward, his work was introduced to Asia through Tang Contemporary Art in Korea, China, and Macao. His exhibitions reflected a clear strategy: Over the Influence represented him in the West, while Tang Contemporary handled his shows in Asia. This approach recognized his growing international appeal and allowed him to connect with diverse audiences.

Much of Gongkan’s art is deeply personal, reflecting his struggles with mental health. His teleportation motif originally symbolized an escape from external hardships, but over time, his work has shifted to an inward journey. His latest collection, ‘No Heart Here’, explores themes of inner peace and emotional introspection, embracing a more serene and meditative tone.

His work often reflects the emotional complexities of modern life, exposing the disconnect between body and mind and the unspoken inner dialogues that shape our experiences.

His creative process is intuitive, with each piece stemming from his current state of mind. Whether addressing mental health, cultural contrasts, or personal growth, Gongkan carefully sketches his ideas before translating them onto canvas. Some installation

and sculpture projects, like ‘Maze of Dreams’ and ‘After the Rain’, require months of preparation and meticulous craftsmanship.

In addition to his fine art, Gongkan excels at creating commercial merchandise, distinguishing him from many “art for art’s sake” Thai artists. His ability to blend high art with accessible products has broadened his reach and connected him with a younger audience.

Cultural references run deep in Gongkan’s work, where Thai heritage, pop culture, and surrealist influences blend to create thought-provoking imagery.

While Gongkan’s work resonates globally, his Thai roots remain integral to his visual language. He incorporates elements of classical Thai culture, blending them with modern themes to create something both distinctly Thai and universally accessible. His pieces often depict statuesque, business-attired figures set against surrealist backdrops, subtly reflecting the country’s Buddhist influence while exploring themes of identity, globalization, and cultural contrast.

This balance between heritage and innovation not only defines Gongkan’s work but also mirrors a broader shift in Thailand’s contemporary art scene. As artists like him push creative boundaries while maintaining a connection to their origins, they contribute to a growing artistic dialogue that reaches both local and international audiences.

 Gongkan has observed a significant transformation in Thailand’s art landscape. Both artists and audiences are becoming more engaged, with a rising interest in exhibitions and artistic careers. As a result, the local art scene is developing both in quality and global reach, allowing more Thai artists to gain recognition beyond national borders.

Following his successful solo exhibition at Bangkok’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Gongkan is preparing for his next major showcase at Tang Contemporary Art in Hong Kong this March, coinciding with Art Basel. This upcoming exhibition will explore contrasts between Asian and Western cultures, focusing on his own experiences navigating between the two worlds. Through installation art, he will examine themes of family, tradition, and cross-cultural connections.
