A Family-Centered Sustainable Haven Rooted in Nature

In Melbourne’s suburban landscape, Mahogany House emerges as a thoughtfully crafted multi-generational residence designed by and for its owners—Vish and Gaurav Rajadhyax, co-founders of R ARCHITECTURE. The project exemplifies their studio’s ethos: elevating suburban architecture through design that fuses sustainability, comfort, and family-centric living.

At the heart of the design is a respect for nature. The floorplan was carefully organized around three existing trees on the property—most notably, a majestic mahogany tree that inspired the home’s name and informs its layout. This tree, along with a silver birch and a liquid amber, anchors the home’s spatial experience and drives a biophilic approach throughout.

The house is split into two primary volumes, or "pods," flanking a central north-facing courtyard with a swimming pool. The western pod spans two storeys and houses the main living quarters, while the eastern pod is a single-level suite designed for the owners’ elderly parents. This grandparents’ pod includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a lounge with kitchenette—providing both connection and privacy, essential to the family’s intergenerational needs. A central lounge links the two pods, creating a transitional zone that offers a framed view of the courtyard and pool—an intentional reveal that underscores the home’s serene and layered atmosphere.

Materiality plays a key role in defining Mahogany House’s character. Terracotta shingles—typically used for roofing—are innovatively employed as both wall and roof cladding, tying the home aesthetically to the surrounding foliage. Inside, a palette of natural materials and rich colors infuses warmth and dynamism. Green and plywood cabinetry, leather accents, and bold color walls provide visual interest and reflect the owners’ vibrant taste.

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the design. The home adheres to Passivhaus principles, prioritizing airtightness and energy efficiency. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) enhance thermal performance, and the building is “right-sized” to minimize energy waste—delivering comfort without excess.

The interiors reflect a lived-in vibrancy, with curved elements and an abundance of indoor plants reinforcing the home’s biophilic sensibility. The house is not only designed for beauty and functionality, but also to support a lifestyle of connection—both to nature and across generations.

R ARCHITECTURE

Vish and Gaurav Rajadhyax co-founded R ARCHITECTURE in 2011, an architecture and interior design practice that embodies their passion for bringing great design to suburban contexts. The practice's mission is to improve access to great design, and to improve the impact of urban development in suburban regions. Good design is achieved at R ARCHITECTURE through carefully balancing affordability, sustainability, liveability, and practicality with aesthetics.
