n aesthetic of "presence and absence" in a gallery for ancient Chinese porcelain
Located in Hangzhou, China, Rose Gallery is an art gallery dedicated to showcasing ancient Chinese porcelain. The architectural and interior design of the space was led by WJ STUDIO, with a concept rooted in the Daoist philosophy of Lao Tzu: “Presence” (有) refers to the objects, while “absence” (無) refers to the space. The gallery seeks to express how emptiness can amplify the essence of what is present, turning the space itself into a silent vessel for the artworks it holds.
The spatial configuration follows the concept of a "house within a house." Like an unglazed bisque body, the minimalist and pure environment gives room for the objects to breathe, expand, and transform. Subtle echoes of traditional Chinese architecture—particularly the layered spatial progressions—are embedded throughout. Clear beam structures and solitary columns turn the concrete box into a house-like space infused with a quiet, ancient resonance.

Light and shadow are carefully orchestrated. Rather than harsh direct light, a soft, diffused glow envelops the pieces, evoking the atmosphere of a time before glass—when daylight filtered through wooden lattices and filled rooms with gentle warmth. As the light fades, the iridescence of Jian zhan bowls and the patinated glazes of ancient ceramics begin to reveal themselves, offering viewers a timeless experience that bridges the past and present.

At the heart of the gallery is the idea that "one object contains a world." Visitors are not overwhelmed by a dazzling array of items. Instead, they are invited to sit quietly and unwrap cloth-bound pieces one by one. The cloud-like patterns of Ru ware’s sky-blue glaze or the cosmic effects within a Jian zhan bowl's kiln change become portals to introspection. This deliberate and intimate encounter embodies the Chinese literati ideal of "seeing the large in the small." Space becomes the vessel that holds form. Light and shadow become the brush that adds depth. Objects become the heart that carries meaning. In the right context, each object reveals its unique and irreplaceable beauty.
