Blending Mountain and Sea in Perfect Harmony
The MALVEIRA DA SERRA project, designed by OODA, is situated at the crossroads of mountain and sea, seamlessly integrating into the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. This location merges urban and rural landscapes, with the surrounding area characterized by vernacular architecture, stone walls, and cottages nestled within the mountains, underscoring the historical and cultural essence of the region.
The project consists of two residences that discreetly blend into the natural environment, with only two floors above ground. Perched on a promontory, these houses offer privileged views of the surrounding countryside. The connection to the topography is enhanced by a steep rocky slope, largely preserved in its natural state, which highlights the rock formations and existing vegetation that harmoniously merge with the landscape.
Utilizing Natural Resources and Harmonizing with the Landscape
A key element of the project is the utilization of the site's natural resources. Horizontal cantilevered slabs extend the garden areas, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. This strategy not only strengthens the visual connection with the landscape but also ensures that each house enjoys unobstructed views of the surroundings. The vertical exterior surfaces are clad in cyclopean concrete, using stones available on-site. This material not only integrates robustly with the landscape but also gives the impression that the new buildings belong to the site, acting as a transitional link between the existing structures and the new development. For the horizontal planes, smooth pure concrete is used, creating a visual and textural contrast with the vertical cyclopean concrete elements, giving them greater prominence. This contrast generates the impression that the new elements rest lightly on walls made of local materials, adding a dynamic visual impact to the complex.
Design in Harmony with the Environment
The solar orientation was carefully studied to maximize natural light and enhance energy efficiency. Additionally, artistic elements were incorporated throughout the project, blending organically into the architectural language, enriching the spaces with a sense of identity and expression. Meticulous planning ensures a strong connection to the outdoors, with each interior space designed to offer unique views of the landscape. Large openings and open layouts emphasize the natural environment as an integral part of the living experience within these spaces.
In line with the project's commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation, the landscape design includes reforestation with native hardwood species. This choice enhances local biodiversity and ensures that the new development is in harmony with the existing ecosystem. The result is a residential environment where architecture and nature coexist in perfect harmony.
