Interpreting the Rich Natural Landscape of Mexico

Nestled along the lush coastline of Nayarit, Mexico, "Casa Chacala" is a residence shaped by a single guiding principle: to follow nature. From the very first site visits, the architecture studio Estudio AMA prioritized preserving the existing vegetation and allowing the trees themselves to determine the orientation and layout of the project.

The site was densely populated with trees of various sizes, including protected species. These clusters defined where architectural interventions could be made, outlining the project’s spatial limits. Two key reference systems emerged: the diagonal axes defined by vegetation, and the site’s natural slope suggesting a descending movement. Their intersection led to a volumetric strategy that inserts architecture between trees, emphasizing the surrounding voids and topography.

The design comprises three primary volumes: an open social core for interior communal spaces, a permeable terrace that directly interacts with the landscape, and a closed solid mass housing the bedrooms. These are linked through triangular courtyards that act as transitional spaces—some social, some private—enhancing the rhythm of movement and pause. A longitudinal axis organizes circulation from the entrance through to the private bedrooms, clearly delineating the shift from public to private zones.

Unlike projects focused on vast views, Casa Chacala turns inward—toward the terrain, the vegetation, and the voids between trees. This introspective approach encourages occupants to engage with their immediate environment on a deeper level.

The architecture rejects orthogonal geometry, instead using diagonals that converge at a central point to generate spatial tension and fluidity. A clear hierarchy of materials supports this: a neutral-toned, solid base anchors the structures to the earth, while a warm, lightweight roof completes the ensemble. Rather than resisting its surroundings, Casa Chacala embraces them. It celebrates the confluence of material, climate, and vegetation—offering an architecture rooted in harmony with its natural context.
