NPO Aoyama Design Forum presents the recommended exhibitions of art galleries and museums in November 2025. The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo MOMAT Collection

The museum’s signature collection exhibition introduces masterpieces selected from its holdings of over 14,000 works. This season features Eikoh Hosoe’s “Ordeal by Roses” (celebrating Yukio Mishima’s 100th birthday), a focus on Koji Enokura (30th anniversary of his death), and the return of Yoshitomo Nara’s “Harmless Kitty” (1994) after nearly two years.

Tokyo Art Museum Natsuki Takayama Solo Exhibition: Formless Landscapes

This solo exhibition by Natsuki Takayama features paintings, sculptures, and installations created by carving through layers of acrylic paint. Her sensory-based works resonate with the building designed by Tadao Ando.

The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama Kozo Nojima and Yori Saito: Hands that Grasp Beauty, Eyes that Inspire It

Focusing on the relationship between photographer Kozo Nojima and painter Yori Saito, this exhibition explores modern Japanese art through their artistic dialogue and shared aesthetic pursuits in the Taisho era.

The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura Annex Kimio Kawaguchi: Thousands are Sailing

Poetic landscapes created using a blend of tempera and oil paint define Kimio Kawaguchi’s practice. This is his first solo exhibition at a public museum in about 10 years, featuring roughly 40 works from early to recent periods.

The first large-scale retrospective of Arata Isozaki since his passing in 2022. Held in the building he designed, the exhibition explores his interdisciplinary vision through models, drawings, and installations.

This exhibition examines shifts in creativity and values in the 21st century through contemporary art by Japanese and international artists, with a focus on the last 25 years.

Curated by Noriko Kawakami and Kaoru Tashiro, this exhibition introduces six influential designers—Bruno Munari, Max Bill, Achille Castiglioni, Otl Aicher, Enzo Mari, and Dieter Rams—highlighting their ideas, pedagogy, and influence on society. Also features the perspective of Shutaro Mukai (1932–2024).

This two-venue exhibition commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of Uemura Shoen, showcasing her iconic bijin-ga alongside works from other eras and artists. Visitors can explore how representations of women evolved across Japanese painting history.
