シカゴアートシーン Vol.4
こんにちは、久しぶりの投稿です。シカゴは最近まで肌寒い日が続いていましたが、6月に入り日中は心地よい季節になってきました。今年のシカゴの冬は異常に長く、春はあってないような気候でしたが、これから本格的に暖かくなり、夏場はミシガン湖から吹く風のおかげでそれほど蒸し暑くならないので、居心地がよく観光にはおすすめです。ニューヨークではこの時期、"Whiteney Biennle"が開催され、大変盛り上がっていますが、シカゴも今後オープニングやアートフェアなどのアートイベントが増えてきます。現在シカゴ美術館では葛飾北斎を始めとした浮世絵の展覧会“Connoisseurship of Japanese Prints”が開催されていますので、シカゴに出張・旅行される方は是非美術館に訪れてみてはいかがでしょうか。
今回は4/26～5/15までの期間、シカゴ芸術大学School of Art Institute of ChicagoのMFA show (Thesis Presentation) が開催されたのでレポートします。毎年卒業前に開催されるMFAshowは２年間の大学院生活の集大成とも言える展示会です。一般の方、学生の友人や家 族、学校関係者だけでなく、アメリカ国内のキュレーターやギャラリー関係者、アートディーラーなど多くの方が訪れます。そのため、単なる発表の場だけでなく自分自身の作品を世間に売り込める機会でもあり、今後のキャリアの第一歩となる側面も持ち合わせています。初日のレセプションに伺いましたが、学生や関係者のお祝いムードが漂う中、巨大な展示空間の中に数十名のアーティストの作品が、絵画や彫刻、ビデオに写真、パフォーマンスなど分野をまたいで一堂に展示されてあり、素晴らしい作品が多く、一点一点見ているといい意味で目が疲れました。一部雰囲気だけですが写真で紹介します。個々のアーティストの作品にご興味がある方は公式ホームページから確認してください。
最後に今回もインタビューで締めくくります。今回はモロッコ出身のアーティストで、前述のシカゴ芸術大学の大学院卒業生、ヤスミン・ハドニ (Yasmine Hadni)です。絵画を専攻しながら学生中にビデオや音楽など新しい分野に裾野を広げていったそうです。作家本人の家族とのつながりや幼少期の経験からインスピレーションうけており家庭生活や人とのつながり、母国の文化から形成された独特な世界観があるように感じます。ビデオ作品も新鮮で何度も見ても引き込まれてしまいます。母語はフランス語なので英語はネイティブではないですが、原文のまま掲載します。
⑴ Could you introduce yourself briefly?
My name is Yasmine Hadni, I am a Moroccan artist, raised in Morocco until I enrolled in art school in France as an undergraduate student. And then I came to Chicago where I graduated in painting and drawing department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I see myself as a visual artist who jumps into different mediums: from video, sound to painting and drawing, depending on the project I am treating and how effective it is to my subject.
(2) I imagine two years of MFA program should be very busy and lots of thing to learn. How do you feel after completing the MFA program and what had you learned at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago?
Graduate life in SAIC helped me to trust in myself as an artist. I learned so much: I learned to say no to some criticisms but also to negotiate some other criticisms. It basically taught me the idea of integrity and how as an artist principles and values need to be fully imbedded in my work. I also loved to have so many international fellow artists by my side that helped me to be less ignorant and who helped me to grow as an artist.
(3) Has there been any specific focus in your practice?
My work is focused on the personal and the affective. In my last project "back to the roots" I exposed my relationship with my family by translating through painting the vague memories of the little girl I had been; the figure of the mother, the father and the elder sister are at the heart of this work. There is also this idea of claustrophobia that sometimes comes back in some of paintings where the space appears almost too confined to accommodate everyone. My recent project in painting and video is all about my relationship with my Nanny, a journey that I am taking where I try to comprehend this relationship fully and frankly by taking distance from it. It’s a project that talks about class, privilege, love and how this love is more complex that what it appeared to me in a younger age. During the video “I plead guilty” I question how much it must have cost nannies in a Moroccan society to sacrifice a part of their life for the good of ours, and whether having been part of this equation as a kid was wrong or not.
(4) Could tell me more about current concept and practice of your art?
Recently, I work alternatively in video and painting. I have long been interested in how I represent humans I care about in my paintings. They are not figure, not body, but human that I paint and often individual that I know, love and respect. I want to know how to represent the human sensitivity of person or a personal relationship I have and I only see painting that allows me to reveal something more about them than their physical appearance. For what concerns video: image is real, strong and carry a direct message, it’s honest and I cannot hide below an image, that’s what I love about it: honesty and the urgency about delivering a message in a world where everything is about confusion and the self (selfishness).

(5) What is your future perspective and goal as an artist?
My perspective as an artist didn’t changed, it only grown and got stronger with time. Being committed to my ideas, carrying these strong ideas to an audience in need to be questioned or/and pushed is the goal for me today.
