A Gateway to Dubai’s First Forest Living Community

Ghaf Woods Experience Centre, a landmark project at the heart of the city’s first forest living community is unveiled in Dubai. Designed by Chinese architecture firm aoe—with development support from Dubai-based STUDIOI—the centre serves as both an immersive visitor destination and a prototype for sustainable, climate-adaptive urbanism in the Middle East.

Located near Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Highway and adjacent to the popular Global Village, the centre acts as the entry point to Ghaf Woods, a master-planned community where urban life and nature are deeply intertwined. The project marks aoe’s first overseas commission, symbolizing a significant milestone for the Beijing-founded practice.

The centre’s architecture takes inspiration from the desert landscape, its fluid form resembling a sand dune rising organically from the terrain. Its stepped GRC façade flows rhythmically, while a glass curtain wall on the southern side opens to a landscaped pond and forest canopy—blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Visitors approach through a curated woodland journey that gradually shields them from city noise, reinforcing the project’s ethos of "living in harmony with nature."

Inside, the building combines "storytelling, technology, and placemaking". Highlights include a dramatic "Light Tunnel", a high-precision "3D master plan model", material exhibits that showcase sustainable construction choices, and a "VR suite" where future homes and landscapes are brought to life. Outdoor amenities—such as an amphitheatre, event plaza, quiet garden, and water garden—extend the immersive journey, offering contemplative and social spaces that enrich the experience.

Functionally, the centre also integrates a VIP lounge and office spaces, positioned to maintain privacy while staying connected to the surrounding forest. Flexibility was key: the open-plan layout allows for future evolution into a cultural venue, educational hub, or resident space, ensuring long-term relevance.

Sustainability is embedded at every level. Shaded eaves reduce solar gain, while water features enhance passive cooling. The surrounding forest ecosystem—planted with native and adaptive species—helps lower ambient temperatures, demonstrating how ecological design can outperform conventional desert development in livability and comfort.

Beyond being a marketing showcase, the Ghaf Woods Experience Centre positions itself as a working model of biophilic design and low-carbon urban living. It illustrates how architecture can foster ecological intelligence and community wellbeing, setting a precedent for the region’s future developments.

By merging innovation, sustainability, and immersive design, the centre does more than present a vision—it actively demonstrates a paradigm shift in how cities can be built: resilient, adaptive, and profoundly connected to nature.
