Bangkok Design Week 2020 Opens

From February 1st to 9th, 2020, the city transforms into a giant creative playground with a host of exhibitions, workshops, lectures, film screenings, and other activities. To highlight Bangkok's status as one of UNESCO's Creative Cities, the third edition of Bangkok Design Week 2020 (BKKDW) will not only be held in the "creative district" of Charoenkrung but also across other parts of town, including Samyan, Ari, Thonglor, and Ekkamai.

Organized by Creative Economy Agency (CEA), a public organization which is part of Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC), the concept of this year's festival is 'Resilience: New potential for living, adapt> survive> Grow' to promote creativity and the exchange of ideas. CEA joins forces with 60 organizations and 2,000 creators to explore new opportunities for Bangkok to strengthen the city as a creative hub further.

Here are a few highlights visitors can expect during this nine-day cultural extravaganza.

BKKDW2020 Routes

Visitors are encouraged to explore the creative district by choosing one of seven themed routes, such as 'Innovation and inspiration, 'Craft & new material' or gastronomic route 'Taste of Bangkok. The tour can be undertaken on foot, by bicycle or even by boat cruise. Along the way, they'll discover a variety of open studio spaces, talks, and lectures and workshops by Thai and international thinkers, film screenings, and live music performances.

Bangkok #Safezone Shelter

Given the country's air pollution crisis, it comes as no surprise one of the exhibitions is dedicated to showcasing possible solutions. Organized in collaboration with landscape architectural firm Shma and UNESCO, the exhibition showcases an "Air Quality Pavilion", a prototype for a green safe space to protect against air pollution. There's also an exhibition called "Everlasting Forest by GC", which promotes the production of goods and services using environmentally friendly processes.

7 Wonders of Business Resilience

Seven well-known brands share their business success stories to inspire and encourage local entrepreneurs. Brands that will give a creative pep-talk include Super Lock & Micron Ware (premium containers), Ta.Tha.Ta (designer of urban bags), architectural company A49, NaRaYa (handicraft bags), Thai restaurant Baan Somtum and design firm Siam 1982.

Made in Charoenkrung

Through a series of collaborative efforts between traditional shops and art and craft shops in the area, designers, and business people, this project aims to develop businesses further so that they can grow steadily and adapt to modern-day requirements, as well as increase business opportunities. The event is a lively mix of music, film screenings, art shows, performances, and open house activities, all in celebration of Bangkok as a hotbed of creativity.
