F<\/span>or more than seven decades, World Press Photo<\/a> has set the standard for photojournalism, offering a global view of the stories that define each year. Founded in 1955 in the Netherlands, the annual contest has grown into one of the world\u2019s most respected platforms for documentary photography, drawing thousands of submissions from across the globe. Each edition captures not only major events, but also how they are experienced on a human level, beyond headlines and statistics.<\/p>\r\n

The 2026 contest continues that legacy. This year, more than 57,000 photographs were submitted by nearly 3,800 photographers from 141 countries. The images reflect a year marked by political tension, ongoing conflicts and social change. From the war in Ukraine to the crisis in Gaza and the impact of immigration policies in the United States, 2025 is likely to be remembered as a deeply turbulent year. Photographers usually submit their work in December and January, with the jury meeting soon after to review the entries. In recent years, the contest has shifted to a regional judging system, dividing the world into six areas, including Asia Pacific and Oceania. The aim is to assess images with a stronger understanding of local context while widening representation. With the United States and Donald Trump continuing to dominate global headlines, it\u2019s no surprise that this year\u2019s top image centers on immigration and the human cost of political policy. The 2026 Photo of the Year, Separated by ICE by Carol Guzy<\/em>, was taken inside a federal building in New York, where a father is taken into custody following an immigration court hearing while his wife and children remain behind in visible distress. The setting is stark and institutional, yet the emotional impact is immediate. What might otherwise seem like an ordinary hallway becomes the backdrop for a deeply personal and politically charged scene.<\/p>\r\n

The image resonates not only because of its emotion, but also because of what it represents. Decades after suffering violence during the country\u2019s civil war, they have secured a legal victory. These contextual details draw the viewer into the situation without the intrusion of the photographer\u2019s presence. The result is a work that elicits empathy while serving as a vivid record of a defining moment from 2025.<\/p>\r\n

Following the announcement of the winners, the images will travel as part of a global exhibition, beginning in Amsterdam and moving to more than sixty cities worldwide. The exhibition offers audiences the chance to engage with the work in a physical space, where the scale and detail of the images can be experienced more directly.
