A Contemporary Residence for Art Collectors on Lake Memphremagog<\/h3>\r\n

L<\/span>ocated on the western banks of Lake Memphremagog in Quebec, Canada, \"House on the Lake\" presents a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional barn volume typical of rural Quebec. The project is designed by the Montreal-based architecture and design studio Atelier \u00c9chelle<\/a>. Conceived as a residence for an art-collector couple, the house is oriented to capture the breathtaking sunsets over the serene lake.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

The design repeats the prototypical barn form in four distinct articulations: an outdoor summer home, an indoor winter home, a living quarter, and a guest quarter. Cedar roofs, brick walls, and glass bridges connect the four volumes into a singular architectural experience. This six-bedroom waterfront residence provides generous spaces for family gatherings and entertaining friends. Inside, a sequence of galleries and in-situ installations introduces moments of discovery, allowing art to integrate seamlessly with architecture. Floor-to-ceiling exterior glass walls frame the surrounding natural landscape, which shifts dynamically with time and season.<\/p>\r\n

Same Volume Different Functions<\/h4>\r\n

The house is composed of four programmatically distinct volumes, each scaled according to its purpose. Clerestory windows bring abundant natural light into every volume. Glass bridges hover above the ground, linking the structures with a sense of lightness. Closest to the lake, the outdoor summer home takes the form of a 100-foot-long terrace incorporating an exterior kitchen, al fresco dining area, fireside lounge, and heated pool. The indoor winter home features an open plan with kitchen, dining, lounge, and piano bar. The living quarter contains the primary suite, office, wine cellar, pantry, and powder room. Positioned farthest from the lake, the guest quarter accommodates five bedrooms and a children\u2019s lounge.<\/p>\r\n\n\t\t
