During the centuries our products have developed from necessary items such as mouth blown windows or medicine bottles to beautiful usable tableware and statement sculptures. Skilled designer’s capable of capturing the crystal’s characteristics has been vital. Among them Mats Jonasson, known as the son of Målerås and the glassworks, stands out. Mats Jonasson’s talent as a designer attracted attention early on when he started work as an apprentice engraver at the glassworks in 1959. Over the next few decades he worked with many of the most respected contemporary glass artists in Sweden. During this period, he developed that natural style of his which he’s since perfected.

_44046 Electra

MATS JONASSON - A TRUE PATRIO

After some turbulent decades with a number of different owners and closure threats, Mats Jonasson saved the glasswork from an uncertain future when he bought it in 1981. Mats was certain in his vision to keep the glassworks in Målerås and preserve the craft tradition in the village. Since 1981 Mats Jonasson has been gathering capable people around him. This concentration has yielded results beyond expectation and inscribed the works in the Swedish glass history as one of the most successful. The production of glass reliefs that has become the characteristic of the works has turned out into a profitable business. The Mats Jonasson family is now the majority owner of Målerås Glasbruk and the basic idea never changes; handmade crystal manufactured at the glassworks in Målerås.
