Exploring the future of materials

Naterial Matters returns to Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf as part of the London Design Festival 2024. Running from September 18th (Wednesday) to 21st (Saturday), this fair brings together world-leading brands, designers, makers, and innovators to explore and celebrate the significance of materials and their impact on our lives.

The fair is free to attend for trade visitors, but pre-registration is essential. Registration can be done through the official website. Here are some of the collaborations, partnerships, and features visitors can experience over the four days.

Room 12: Exploring Supply and Demand

TP Bennett has partnered with The Furniture Practice to guide visitors through an exploration of the evolving relationship between raw materials, geography, people, and supply chains. This room highlights products from twelve brands in the commercial interior industry, showcasing their manufacturing processes and the roles both humans and nature play.

Locally Grown: Hair as a New Material

On the second floor of Bargehouse, "Locally Grown," an interactive installation by Studio Sanne Visser, invites visitors to explore their hair as a new material. Visitors can receive a free haircut and watch their hair being transformed into rope. Supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and co-curated by Vickie Hayward, this exhibition delves into the possibilities of regenerative design.

Designer of the Year: PriestmanGoode

Each year, Material Matters spotlights a design studio. For 2024, PriestmanGoode, a leading transport interior designer, has been chosen. Their installation, "Moving Responsibly: A Material Journey," examines each phase of the design process and how it defines future transport systems that are safe, responsible, and sustainable.

Fibre Futures: A New Exhibition by BIOTEXFUTURE

Fibre Futures is a new exhibition by BIOTEXFUTURE, an innovation space funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Led by adidas and RWTH Aachen University, this installation explores cross-industry processes and material innovation in high-performance textiles, focusing on alternative resource streams, innovative spinning techniques, and cutting-edge bio-manufacturing techniques.

The Wood Awards

The Wood Awards, established in 1971, returns to gallery@oxo. This award celebrates excellence in wood design, with categories across furniture, objects, and buildings. The exhibition features the shortlisted furniture and objects for 2024, showcasing the potential of timber in design and architecture.

Talks Space

Material Matters is a hub for material intelligence. The top floor of Bargehouse will host live events and discussions with experts and creative leaders. This year, the Talks Space is designed and produced by Woven Image, the official acoustics partner.
