A learning environment that carries on the legacy of Modernist architecture

New York City-based design studio CIVILIAN has completed the interiors for Bard College’s North Campus Residence Complex in Annandale-On-Hudson, New York, in collaboration with architecture firm KPF and project management firm DBI Projects. Located adjacent to the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, the complex includes a 20,000-square-foot Head House featuring study and student life spaces, along with four residential buildings accommodating more than 400 students.

Interiors Inspired by the Legacy of Modernist Student Housing

Drawing on the legacy of student dormitories designed by Modernist architects including Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier, CIVILIAN developed an interior concept that responds directly to KPF’s architectural design. Referencing the formal and material qualities of these iconic residences, the interiors establish a creative identity for Bard College while reinforcing the institution’s commitment to design across its campus.

A Head House Designed for Creative Exchange

The Head House reflects Bard College’s culture of innovation, which has produced alumni such as actor Blythe Danner, comedian Chevy Chase, and filmmaker Gia Coppola. On the ground floor, archival photographs documenting moments of creative exchange celebrate the democratic learning environment fostered by the institution. This spirit extends into the large residential living rooms, where students from different disciplines can meet, collaborate, and develop creative work together. Entered from the green around which the residence buildings are arranged, the Head House includes soft-seating lounge areas and offices connected vertically through a stair atrium. Contemporary custom furniture, including bespoke side tables and work tables with integrated lighting, creates a warm and welcoming study environment. The upper floor features study carrels positioned behind slatted screens adjacent to a lounge area designed for small-group collaboration. Archival photo frames capturing moments of making and creative exchange reinforce the building’s educational mission.

Residential Interiors Designed for Student Living

The interiors of the 92 student apartments prioritize affordability, durability, and user experience while bringing warmth and a sense of ease to communal living. Solid wood and selected laminate materials are used throughout a series of modular furniture systems. Bespoke lighting elements installed at different apartment levels reference the design language of Modernist architecture. Working with furniture manufacturer Foliot, CIVILIAN developed a custom collection for the project. Dining tables with trumpet bases, solid wood benches, deep blue modular sofas, and custom coffee tables define the shared living spaces. Student bedrooms feature bespoke laminate beds with integrated storage drawers, custom wardrobes, and desks.
