An ecological park by DEB Architecture and El Equipo Mazzanti that integrates urban development with environmental restoration

Located in Barranquilla, Colombia, Ciénaga de Mallorquín Ecopark has been developed as a major landscape project that reconnects the city with one of the region’s most valuable wetland ecosystems. Designed by DEB Architecture in collaboration with El Equipo Mazzanti, the project combines ecological restoration, public space, and environmental education within a single framework.

Situated where the Magdalena River meets the Caribbean Sea, the Ciénaga de Mallorquín wetland is home to diverse bird species, mangrove forests, and unique coastal habitats. Despite its ecological significance, the area has long been affected by urban expansion and environmental degradation. The project was conceived as more than a conventional park. It redefines the boundary between the city and the wetland, transforming it into an accessible public landscape while protecting the ecological system. A network of timber boardwalks, observation decks, and resting areas forms the core of the project. Following the natural topography of the wetland, these circulation routes allow visitors to experience the landscape while minimizing environmental impact. The pathways provide direct access to mangrove habitats and panoramic views across the lagoon. Rather than introducing iconic architectural objects, the design team focused on shaping the landscape itself. The project establishes a flexible interface between urban development and ecological preservation. Beyond conservation, the ecopark functions as a destination for environmental education and public engagement.

Birdwatching activities, kayaking experiences, and educational programs encourage visitors to learn about the region’s ecological systems and natural resources. The project is part of the broader “Masterplan Ciénaga de Mallorquín,” which also includes Puerto Mocho Beach and the Bocas de Ceniza tourist railway. Together, these initiatives are transforming the area into a major cultural and ecological destination for Barranquilla. As cities around the world continue to expand, the challenge of balancing public access and environmental preservation becomes increasingly important.

Ciénaga de Mallorquín Ecopark demonstrates how landscape architecture can create meaningful relationships between people and nature while supporting ecological regeneration. The project offers a compelling model for future urban ecological design.
