ブランデーづくり、食、ランドスケープを現代的な農村建築として一体化した新たな「アース・トゥ・グラス」の拠点
ニューヨーク州ハドソン近郊、クラベラックの約74ヘクタール（182エーカー）に及ぶ農地に誕生した「Klocke Estate」は、ブランデー蒸留所、レストラン、農園を融合した新たなデスティネーションである。設計を担当したBarlisWedlick Architectsは、土地との深い結び付きを重視した建築を通して、訪問体験を高めるとともに、ブランドをプレミアムスピリッツ市場における新たな存在として位置付けることを目指した。

the expansiveness of the site with numerous windows and double-height unobstructed views of the
Catskill Mountain range.

施設全体は、「アース・トゥ・グラス（農地からグラスまで）」というコンセプトのもと、果樹園やブドウ畑、蒸留、そしてダイニングを一つの体験として結び付けている。中核となる約860平方メートル（9,300平方フィート）の蒸留所には、生産施設に加え、レストラン、テイスティングルーム、イベントスペース、商業用キッチン、オフィス、屋根付きポーチを備え、生産とホスピタリティを切り離すのではなく、その両者が交わる場として計画された。来訪者は、ブランデーづくりの工程を間近に感じながら、周囲の豊かな景観を楽しむことができる。

建築は、あたかも以前からこの土地に存在していたかのような佇まいを目指している。ハドソン・バレーの農業建築に着想を得ながら、地形やスケール、素材を丁寧に読み解き、打放しコンクリートの基礎と特注色のダークブロンズの波形金属外装によって、現代的でありながら時代を超えて親しまれる表情を生み出した。

曲がりくねった道を進み丘の頂に到着すると、南側に設けられた吹き抜けのダイニングルームの大開口が来訪者を迎える。屋根付きポーチや印象的なエントランスポルティコがアプローチを演出し、西側にはキャッツキル山地を望む大きな開口部を配置。一方、生産機能は北側に集約され、運営効率と来訪体験の双方を考慮した構成となっている。

環境性能も本プロジェクトの大きな特徴だ。BarlisWedlick Architectsは、パッシブハウス設計の知見を生かし、建物の方位計画、トリプルガラス、高断熱・高気密仕様などを採用。さらに、蒸留工程で発生する熱を床暖房や融雪設備に再利用するシステムを導入することで、エネルギー効率を高めている。また、灌漑や防火に利用する雨水貯留池を整備し、公共インフラへの依存も最小限に抑えている。

インテリアは、ハドソン・バレーの歴史や文化に着想を得ながら、「特定の時代に属さない空間」を目指してKen Fulk Inc.によりデザインされた。オランダ人入植の歴史や芸術文化、保養地としての地域性を背景に、落ち着いた色彩と19世紀半ばの装飾様式を取り入れている。エントランスではシュルレアリスム風の壁画が来訪者を迎え、「時間」をテーマとするモチーフが館内全体へと展開される。グレートルームやライブラリー、サロンでは、ブランデーづくりを想起させる素材や意匠が空間に統一感をもたらしている。

ランドスケープは建築体験を屋外へと拡張する役割を担う。園路は果樹園やブドウ畑へと自然に来訪者を導き、農業と食、蒸留のつながりを体感できるよう計画された。農園で育てられた食材はレストランの料理やブランデー、ベルモットの製造にも活用され、栽培から食卓までを一体的に結ぶ体験を創出している。ハドソン・バレーの豊かな農業景観を背景に、Wagner Hodgson Landscape Architectureによる控えめでありながら力強いランドスケープが建築と自然を穏やかにつないでいる。
