歴史的建築の保存、アクセシビリティ、先進的な構造技術を融合し、北カリフォルニアの文化施設に新たな価値をもたらす
CAWアーキテクツ（CAW）が、歴史的建築の保存と現代のパフォーマンス施設に求められる機能性を両立させた、北カリフォルニアの3つの主要プロジェクトを完成させた。対象となったのは、サンフランシスコの「カストロ・シアター」、UCバークレーの「ハースト・グリーク・シアター」、そしてサクラメントの新たなライブ会場「Channel 24」である。

このうち最大規模となるのが、総工費4,100万ドルを投じたカストロ・シアターの改修プロジェクトだ。同劇場はサンフランシスコを代表する歴史的建造物であり、長年にわたりLGBTQ+コミュニティの文化的拠点として親しまれてきた。CAWは保存建築事務所Page & Turnbull、劇場コンサルタントのShalleck Collaborativeと協働し、1922年築の劇場を修復するとともに、多様な演目に対応できる施設へと再生した。映画上映時の傾斜客席とライブ公演時のフラットフロアを切り替えられる特注の可動式オーケストラフロアを導入したほか、歴史的な天井画や壁画を修復し、最新の舞台設備や世界最大のデジタルオルガン、バリアフリー設備を一体的に整備している。

サクラメントでは、Ellis Architectsと協働し、収容人数2,200人のライブエンターテインメント施設「Channel 24」を新築した。Another Planet Entertainmentの依頼により計画された同施設は、中規模ライブ会場が不足していた地域の需要に応えるもので、打放しコンクリートや鉄骨、金属パネルなどを用いた工業的なデザインを特徴とする。長スパンの鉄骨トラスや張り出しバルコニー、制振装置、優れた遮音性能など、高度な構造技術を採用することで、快適な観覧環境と高品質なライブパフォーマンスを実現した。この設計は高く評価され、2025 Structural Engineers Association Award for Excellenceを受賞している。

一方、UCバークレーでは、国定歴史建造物であるハースト・グリーク・シアターにおいて3件目となるプロジェクトを完了した。敷地東側の斜面を全面的に再整備し、約3,000人を収容する段状の芝生観客席を整備することで、アクセシビリティと快適性を大幅に向上させた。掘削土を敷地内で再利用することで環境負荷を抑え、新たな広場やプロムナードも創出している。また、消防車両用の進入路を歩行者空間として景観に溶け込ませるなど、機能性と歴史的景観の調和にも配慮した。
